Slidell Community Information

Slidell, Louisiana is the largest city located on the northeastern shore of Lake Pontchartrain and St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana.

Welcome LA Slidell 2009 WBlogThe city of Slidell is one of Louisiana’s most promising communities. It is ideally located at the intersection of Interstates 10, 12, and 59. Slidell has a character and appeal all of its own, despite just being a short drive away from the famous attractions of New Orleans.

The city is popular for many reasons. Even though Slidell’s location is near in proximity to the French Quarter, the Superdome, the world-famous Mardi Gras celebrations, and all the other attractions of New Orleans, it still retains its own unique identity. Mainly due to Lake Pontchartrain, which divides these two cities, Slidell is thriving community and has escaped the problems which trouble many large metropolitan areas without being isolated from the world.

Public schools in Slidell are operated by the “St. Tammany Parish Public Schools”. There are 20 public schools in Slidell and a total of 1,334 public schools in Louisiana. Within these are three public high schools: Northshore High School, Salmen High School, and Slidell High School, and two private high schools: Pope John Paul II High School and First Baptist Christian School. There are also 8 private schools in Slidell and a total of 395 private schools in Louisiana. There are 3 post-secondary schools in Slidell and a total of 175 post-secondary schools in Louisiana.

Slidell is a virtual paradise for people who loves the great outdoors. It offers plenty of activities for fishing, hunting, shrimping, crabbing, crawfishing, boating, swimming, and camping, in many cases literally in one’s own backyard. Honey Island Swamp is located at the east of Slidell, a preserved river swamp full of wildlife and beautiful scenery, which can be visited through guided boat tours. This “list” will give you information on the city’s parks and recreations.

The largest and busiest public library is also located in Slidell; the Slidell Cultural Center, a history, science, and fine art exhibition gallery; the Slidell Museum, showing exhibits on the city’s history; and the Slidell Little Theater

Slidell’s economy is boosted by several established companies in and around the city. These “companies/employers” provide stable employment for the population.

Slidell is a city that’s safe and peaceful, thanks to an excellent, nationally-accredited Police Department and, of course, a mostly law- abiding citizenry.

History of the Slidell Community

Slidell was one of the last towns to be founded in St. Tammany Parish. Its founding is coincided with the establishment of the New Orleans and Northeastern Railroad, which surveyed the town site in 1883. At this time, the parish was already famous for its fine clay deposits, which had furnished the raw material for brick making since well before the Civil War. Slidell became a center of brick making with the arrival of Swiss immigrant Fritz Salmen in 1886. Salmen first established a small brick works in which his employees made the bricks by hand. When the company showed promise of success the following year, Fritz sent for his younger brother Jacob to join him in business. Three years later a third brother, Albert, also joined the firm. True entrepreneurs, the brothers soon branched out, establishing a large lumber mill beside the ever expanding brick works. Fritz and Albert also built homes side-by-side on a street directly across from their industrial complex. In addition, they assumed responsibility for their employees’ welfare by building a six-to-eight block neighborhood of small workers houses which became known as Salmen Town.

WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING

John Sibley came highly recommended by a neighbor and he sold our house not only once but twice! A pipe burst upstairs and flooded the house and the first sale was cancelled. We were out of town and John and his staff handled everything from informing us of the problem to working with the adjusters giving them access to the house. When we got back in town just three days later, the damage was already cleaned up and we were ready to begin the repairs!

We were very happy with the service provided. As first time home buyers, we were initially anxious, however, John and the rest of the group helped us understand the home buying process and what to expect. They made sure we were well prepared by the closing and that our interests were top priority.

John was great to work with. He provided good sound advice relative to marketing our home. He kept me informed through every step of the process from the initial listing to the closing. It was a great experience and I recommend the Sibley Group to anyone interested in purchasing or selling real estate property.

John & company were always negotiating on my behalf and won the battle such as letting me have an Estate Sale w/o charging me rent for one week and then the new owner moved in. The Sibley Realty Group was always professional in every way.

John and the Sibley Realty Group had a great command of the market prices and an excellent marketing strategy to get new groups of people to look at our property. By using new technology to market to different buyers and target new groups of potential buyers the Sibley Realty Group met our goal of selling within 3 months. The entire office helped make the transition smooth and Lauren is very helpful making sure everyone is on the same page as you go through the closing process. It is good t(...)

We are extremely grateful to have found Sibley Realty group. Initially I had called other realtors who were not so responsive since we did not live in the area. Jordan contacted me back right away and made us feel at ease with our first home purchase. We lived 7 hours away from where we were buying and Jordan was very accomendating to our schedule of only being able to make it down on the weekends. The whole office are a bunch of true professionals that we owe more gratitiude to then we can(...)
